<p>It does seem, doesn&#8217;t it, that it doesn&#8217;t matter where we turn nowadays, there are news stories and advertisements, alike, touting the stunning research on innumerable exotic supplements, not to mention the newest health proclamations of coffee and red wine that, indubitably, guarantee to decrease or eliminate all causes of mortality? It would almost seem, in fact, that a quest for immortality has replaced our search for longevity!</p>
<p>Let me clarify, first of all, that I am a believer in taking supplements and take them, myself. Secondly, I would like to be candid and say that I am one who appreciates a glass of red wine. Therefore, the suggestion that it might truly be beneficial to my health, particularly my heart, simply adds to my enjoyment. And, if an stimulant like caffeine could demonstrably prevent the symptoms of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, then I&#8217;d be tempted to give up my practice and open a Starbucks.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s take a deep breath and reflect on a couple of facts, however, prior to your deciding to add more caffeine to your morning grind, increase the red wine you may drink in the evening, or before you consider selling the family heirlooms in order to pay for high-priced minerals and herbs that promise to extend your life indefinitely.</p>
<p>For example, let us think about the human condition. We are dynamic, biological beings, free to enthusiastically participate in life. We have not been cooped up in a cage all our life, and we have not been bred to &#8220;unnaturally&#8221; incur the age-related afflictions that lab animals do, disease and debilitation that is then &#8220;eliminated&#8221; by resveratrol, caffeine, or some &#8220;amazing&#8221; supplement.</p>
<p>In addition, our being dynamic and biological means that we are not &#8220;robots,&#8221; and that we are more than the sum total of our parts. We are each biologically unique in certain ways, which is to say, we respond differently to internal stimulating factors and external instigating influences. For example, though generally, smoking cigarettes is harmful, there is a small minority of people who appear to be able to smoke and live to be ninety years old without any obvious ill effects.</p>
<p>The outcomes upon which scientific research and testing are rely upon the isolation of a particular variable. It is this method that gives scientific inquiry its legitimacy. However, because tests related to human health issues occur through this very method, and are most often done on lab animals, when it comes to human beings, the effects are very likely to be quite different. In fact, to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, what might benefit some of the people all of the time, most likely won&#8217;t work for all of the people all of the time (and sometimes won&#8217;t work at all!).</p>
<p>You make choices each day, some that are intentional and othe<a href="" target=></a>rs that may be indifferent, that will affect your physical health, now and in the future. You decide what (and how much) you&#8217;ll eat and drink, and the amount of physical activity and rest you&#8217;ll get. Even though you can &#8220;sense&#8221; what is healthy for you, by the way your body responds, sometimes, perhaps too often, you may override the feedback. Clearly, when you don&#8217;t consciously make healthy choices, you jeopardize your health and longevity.</p>
<p>Then you, like many others, may enthusiastically jump on the bandwagon of the latest report that announces that researchers have uncovered THE VERY THING that has the potency to reverse all of the excessive and unhealthy things you have been doing to your body on a routine basis! Talk about wishful thinking!</p>
<p>The elegantly balanced system of your body (homeostasis) is highly responsive and intricate. This delicate system becomes &#8220;off balance&#8221; when you live an unhealthy lifestyle. Eventually, the imbalances nurtured through poor health choices, result in diseases.</p>
<p>As a chiropractor who supplements daily, I suggest that you supplement, too, if they help you to feel vigorously healthy. I agree, as well, that if it feels like the thing to do, an extra cup of coffee might actually be personally beneficial for you. And, if it truly feels healthy, have a little more red wine. Just keep in mind, however, that the only authentic way that you can prevent or reverse age-related health problems is by changing an unhealthy lifestyle. You won&#8217;t become healthier or live longer by waiting for the discovery of a &#8220;magic potion.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Just the other day I found an article on sciencedaily.com how caffeine reversed memory loss in aged mice induced to develop symptoms of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. The article began with the <em>angle</em> that &#8220;Coffee drinkers may have another reason to pour that extra cup.&#8221;  It continued by discussing a sequence of studies published online July 6 in the <em>Journal of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease</em> that showed that caffeine considerably decreased abnormal levels of the protein linked to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, both in the brains and in the blood of mice displaying symptoms of the disease.</p>
<p>However, before you opt to add another cuppa to your morning routine, let me warn you that under &#8220;Related Stories&#8221; on the website were a couple of articles about studies that demonstrated the not-so-healthy effects of caffeine, &#8220;Morning Jolt of Caffeine May Mask Serious Sleep Problems,&#8221; and &#8220;Coffee Consumption Linked To Increased Risk Of Heart Attack For Persons With Certain Gene Variation.&#8221;</p>
<p>In my experience, I&#8217;ve noticed that there are probably studies that will confirm, or at least support, nearly any view point, in particular when it is about health and longevity. The &#8220;yin-yang&#8221; of caffeine benefits-deficits naturally aren&#8217;t, of course, the only ones. But, it did get me to pondering about the reasonableness that there will not ever be simply &#8220;one thing&#8221; that will absolutely help we, humans, to live longer, healthier lives. Humans are dynamic, biological creatures. We aren&#8217;t bred in a cage! We are free to make choices in life. And, let&#8217;s face it, though Alzheimer&#8217;s disease is likely on the rise, obviously none of us has been &#8220;bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease,&#8221; therefore caffeine isn&#8217;t going to be the &#8220;one thing&#8221; that is going to reverse or prevent it.</p>
<p>Our body is an exquisite, intricate system that is designed to function homeostasis, that is to say, balance. It makes sense, then, that good health is about a healthy, balanced approach to living, instead of our being blindly convinced by the latest health study and &#8220;doing&#8221; or &#8220;overdoing&#8221; one specific thing under the illusion that it will reverse all of the other excessive and harmful things we do to our bodies.</p>
<p>I believe, as a doctor of chiropractic, that every single day we have an opportunity to choose healthfully for our body, to decide what will help us to live <a href="" target=></a>longer, healthier lives. When it comes to what is good for us, we know what truly &#8220;feels&#8221; right and what doesn&#8217;t. So, the if you reach for that extra cup of coffee or that second glass of red wine, I hope that you&#8217;ll think about this. There is no &#8220;one thing&#8221; that will do &#8220;everything&#8221; for your good health.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Chiropractors, like me, agree that &#8220;motion is life.&#8221; We, humans, were designed to walk, to run, to dance, and to move all the muscles of our body for our entire lifespan. So, naturally, it follows that we either &#8220;move it or lose it!&#8221; Our aging &#8220;Baby Boomer&#8221; population is discovering just how true this cautionary advice is when it comes to energy, vitality, mobility, and good health in later years. With every year of our life, we have much to gain from being physically active&#8230;and plenty to lose by living an immobile or sedentary lifestyle.</p>
<p>As our age-related risks of chronic disease<em> increase</em>, regular physical activity can actually slow down the trend. In addition, research has shown that people who have already developed coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Type 2 diabetes, and other age-related chronic diseases can benefit substantially by increasing their physical activity and, therefore, often can manage their chronic illness with fewer medicines.</p>
<p>Furthermore, some studies suggest that the cardiovascular benefits an individual gets from physical activity may also help the brain stay healthy. &#8220;<span class="Normal">Physical activity influences the frontal region of the brain,&#8221; says Dr. Bradley Hatfield, professor of Sports Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park. </span><span class="Normal">So, if you&#8217;ve been wondering what the best thing is that you can do to keep your brain young, the answer may be for you to take a long walk. </span><span class="Normal">A key factor is that exercise <a href="" target=></a>thickens the brain tissue and builds more synapses in the brain.  The brain has 10 billion nerve cells, called neurons, and on average, neurons are connected to each other through 10,000 synapses.  Every time we exercise, more synapses form and the active brain gets stronger.</span></p>
<p>On a regular basis, being physically active increases the quality of life (period). Some of the benefits include improved energy levels, mental sharpness, balance, strength, flexibility, and weight control. Moreover, regular aerobic exericise has been shown to help in the management of depression, anxiety, and stress.</p>
<p>So, even though the facts point conclusively to the validity of the &#8220;move it or lose it!&#8221; warning, they also confirm that it is never to late for you to &#8220;move it&#8221; and regain your health!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You may have read on this website, or elsewhere, about recent studies that have shown that physical activity is requisite to getting and staying healthy, especially as we age. But, if you&#8217;ve been inactive for awhile, even the <em>idea </em>of <strong>exercise</strong> might seem &#8220;exhausting.&#8221; The best way, then, to approach this much-needed addition to your lifestyle is, literally and figuratively, to do it one step at a time. A smart &#8220;first step&#8221; is to see a health care professional, like your chiropractor, for a full physical examination. Once it is confirmed that you won&#8217;t make matters worse through movement, then the next step is simply to start moving a bit each day.</p>
<p><em>Any </em>movement is a step towards better health and <strong>physical fitness</strong>. Walk a lap (or two) around your house or apartment. Put that TV remote away and get up to change the channels. As your body becomes accustomed to moving again, you will probably discover that you actually <em>want </em>to move more. Then you can slowly add additional movement to your daily routine. Increase the walk around your house to a walk around the block, a walk in the park, or even a walk through the shopping mall. Walking with a friend can of<a href="" target=></a>ten help to keep you on track(especially on those days when you&#8217;d rather sit and veg, then get your body moving). If you are physically able, take the stairs instead of using the elevator as often as you can. Park farther away from the entrance to the supermarket and make it a goal to put more and more parking spots between you and the entrance.</p>
<p>After a few weeks of regular physical activity, you will begin to feel the healthful benefits of movement. Then you&#8217;ll be ready for new ways to build flexibility, fitness, and muscle strength. Your chiropractor can advise you on how to become more physically active and help you to development an individualized program.</p>
